Colonial Spanish & American Indian Horses

Cherokee AIHR # A-715, HOF # 106

Cherokee was a once in a lifetime horse. I first met her when I was only 11 years old; she was 15 at the time. I knew the moment that I first saw her that I loved her, and if I ever had a horse of my own I wanted one just like her.

However Cherokee’s owners received a call from an organization that grants the wishes of terminally ill children. They were looking for a gentle laid back horse for a young cancer patient who had always wanted a horse. So Cherokee would go and fulfill some more dreams.

In 1994 I got back into riding after several years away. I started looking for a horse of my own, keeping in mind that my ideal was a little bay pinto by the name of Cherokee. Well, fate has a funny way of working things out. I ran into Cherokee’s owner at a rodeo. I had not seen or spoken with her in several years. After talking with her for a while she said they were moving and her husband wanted to sell all of the horses, but she could not bear to part with Cherokee. Cherokee had been returned to them, as she was too much for the young girl to handle. She offered to give her to me with the understanding that if I ever had to part with her she would come back to them. So in early 1995 Cherokee came home for good.
